Alfred Powis
Alfred
Powis was born in Montreal, Quebec on September 16, 1930. Educated at Westmount
High School and graduated from McGill University in 1951 with a Bachelor of
Commerce Degree. He was employed with the Sun Life Assurance Company Investment
Department from 1951 - 1955, when he then joined Noranda Mines Limited as an
internal auditor.
In 1958, he
was appointed an Assistant Treasurer, Assistant to the President in 1961 and
Executive Assistant in 1963, elected a Director in 1964 and appointed President
and Chief Executive Officer. In 1977, he was appointed Chairman of the Board,
President and Chief Executive Officer in 1977, Chairman and Chief Executive
Officer in 1982 and Chairman in 1990. Mr. Powis retired from Noranda in April 1995
after a 37 year career.
At present,
Mr. Powis sits on the board of directors for several major Canadian companies
including Inmet, Dension, Twin Mining and is a member of the President's
Advisory Council of Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited.
Mr.
Powis is also a Past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The Toronto Hospital,
Member of the Board of Princess Margaret Hospital, Founding Chairman of the
Business Council on National Issues (BCNI), and Member of the British North
American Committee. Mr. Powis was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada
in 1984; Canadian Business Hall of Fame 1995; Canadian Mining Hall of Fame
1996, and received an award from the Mineral Economics and Management Society
for outstanding contribution to mineral economics. He was made an Honourary
Associate of The Conference Board of Canada in October 1997.
