About MEMS

MEMS was founded in 1991 by Dr. William Vogely, of The Pennsylvania State University, and a group of interested mineral economists from industry, academia, and government.  The purpose of the organization is to further the application of economics, management, finance, and policy analysis to the issues of the minerals and materials industries, including resource, energy, and environmental issues.

Since its founding, MEMS has held at least one professional meeting per year, has been co-sponsor of related meetings with other international societies with interests in mineral resource problems, and has published yearly Proceedings of the meetings.

Alternating between Eastern and Western North America, the Society's annual meetings are watershed events for mineral economics information, global insights, and professional networking.  The annual meetings are normally two-and-a-half day events adjoining a weekend. Annual meetings have been held in Boulder and Denver, Colorado; Washington D.C.; Reno, Nevada; and Montreal and Ottawa, Canada.

The papers presented are published in the MEMS Annual Meeting Proceedings which is made available for a small charge.  Many papers presented also find their way into one of the professional journals as refereed publications.  Attendance of the annual meeting and full participation by members are vigorously encouraged.

MEMS has distinguished itself among other professional societies by consistently having extremely high quality papers presented at the annual meetings.  Those participating as speakers at recent luncheon and banquets reflect the quality and diversity of interests of the annual meetings.  A partial list of these speakers include: Mr. Jaques Bougie, President and CEO of Alcan Aluminum Ltd; Dr. Paul Portney, Senior Fellow, Resources for the Future; Mr. Timothy Snider, President of Phelps Dodge Mining Company; Mr. Milton Ward, Chairman and CEO, Cyprus Minerals Co; and Mr. Alfred Powis, former President, Chairman, and CEO of Noranda Mines Ltd.

The paper sessions have investigated a wide variety of relevant topics such as Socio-Economic Issues of Local Impact of Mining, Managing Risk and Financial Performance, Mining Laws and Property Rights, National Mineral Policies, Access to Minerals, Global Environmental Issues, Trends in Global Metals Supply and Demand, and Application of Economic Theory to Mineral Resource Problems.  In addition, there is a yearly student paper contest with cash awards.
