W.A. Vogely - MEMS Award

The MEMS Award was instituted in 1995 to recognize significant contributions to mineral economics.  It was last presented in 2000. In late 2003 the Board of MEMS instituted the W.A. Vogely - MEMS Award, named in honour of the first recipient of the MEMS Award, William A. Vogely.

The W.A. Vogely - MEMS Award was first presented in Toronto in April 2004 on the occasion of the Thirteenth Annual Conference.

William A. Vogely

William Arthur Vogely was instrumental in the establishment of the Mineral Economics and Management Society and was its President in 1992.

Vogely received a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and a doctoral degree from Princeton University in Princeton, N.J.   From 1974 to 1991, he was professor of mineral economics at Penn State, serving as chairman of the department from 1975 through 1988.   Before going to Penn State, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service, the Interior Department, the Bureau of Mines and the Bureau of Land Management.

In addition, from 1971 through 1973 he was director of the Office of Economic Analysis and in 1974 he served as acting deputy assistant secretary of energy and minerals with the Interior Department.

Dr. Vogley was professor emeritus of mineral economics and a Phi Beta Kappa when he died Oct. 31, 1999 at the age of 75. 

Award:

The W.A. Vogely - MEMS Award should be presented annually at the MEMS Conference to a deserving recipient selected by the Board based on nominations received from the membership and mineral economics community.  In the absence of nominations, the MEMS Board can identify a worthy candidate.  to top

Criteria for Presenting the MEMS-Vogley Award:

The award is presented to an individual in recognition of an outstanding contribution to mineral economics.

Qualifying Achievements:

Examples of achievements that qualify for recognition include:

·           Sustained leadership/vision resulting in outstanding company performance

·           Development of new technologies/processes recognized as breakthroughs in the mineral sector

·           Development of new financial tools of great interest/value to the minerals industry.

·           Innovative research in mineral economics

·           Government service in policy analysis and administration

·           Outstanding contributions through teaching of mineral economics and management

·           Exceptional service to MEMS.

The candidate to top

·        Does not have to be a MEMS member.

·        Must be alive

·        Cannot have received the W.A. Vogely-MEMS Award previously

·        Is not presently a MEMS Board member and has not been in the previous two years

It is the responsibility of the President-Elect to compile the nominations and present up to three candidates to the Board prior to February 28.  In the absence of nominations, the President-Elect will canvass the Board for recommendations of worthy candidates and prepare the candidate profile for consideration.

Nomination Process:

Nominations should be submitted by January 31 by clicking HERE.  Nominations shall stand for two years.  Nominations do not require the authorization of the nominee.  Nominations only require the approval/endorsement of one MEMS member.  Recipients will be notified in early March by the President.  It is hoped the recipient will make every effort to attend the annual conference to receive the award in person.to top
